Chapter 18

When Bea and Jadyn first see my room, it feels almost like a show-and-tell session.

Bea picks up the snow globe from my dresser. “Sunny, is that you?” She shakes it so the glitter and metallic star confetti swirl around the tiny ballerina silhouette in the middle.

My cheeks warm. “Yeah, my parents got that made for me for Christmas last year. They used a photo from one of my recitals.” I know it’s supposed to be for little kids, but I still love it.

“That’s so cool. I didn’t know you do ballet, though it seems really obvious now. You move like a ballerina,” Jadyn says, stretching his arms overhead into a classic fifth-position pose. “I did a bit, too, when I was little.”

“Actually, I don’t do ballet anymore.” I bite my lip. “I quit almost a year ago.”

“Really?” Bea asks, putting the snow globe back. She points out all the ballet slipper knickknacks on my dresser. “From the looks of it, you were really into it.”

I shrug, feeling instantly regretful. “I don’t know. Maybe I should have kept at it.”

Jadyn takes the frame from my desk. In it, there’s a picture of me and Bailey dressed up as jars of peanut butter and jelly a few Halloweens ago. “Hey, I recognize this girl. Her name’s Bailey, right? She’s got social studies right after me. We sit in the same seat.”

“Let me see!” Bea says, coming over for a look. “Oh yeah, I’ve seen her around. She’s the one with the dark eyeliner, right?”

“Yup.” I nod. “She’s my best friend.”

“That’s hard to believe.” Jadyn’s eyes nearly bug out of his head. “No disrespect, but you two don’t seem like you’d have anything in common!”

“Why is that?” I ask, curious.

Jadyn shakes his head slowly like he’s not quite sure how to explain it. “Doesn’t she wear a shirt that has I Hate People written on it?”

I burst into laughter. “Yeah, it’s her favorite.” I remember when she got it silkscreened in the kiosk at the mall. “Her sense of humor is on the snarky side.”

“She sounds like fun.” Bea elbows my arm lightly. “You should invite her over so we can all hang out sometime.”

The mere suggestion makes the hairs on my arms stand up straight. Bailey is not shy about showing her true feelings about someone. Just ask Darren. Who knows what she’d say to their faces if given the chance?

“Uh, maybe . . . Yeah, maybe I’ll ask her . . .” Sweat prickles under my armpits. “Are you ready to talk business?”

“Let’s do it!” Bea shuffles through her notes from the last meeting. “Any news from the carpet shampoo lady on Greg’s List?”

“Yes.” Jadyn sits on the floor. “She got back to me and she wants to book us for Friday after school at four. Does that work?”

“Yup! Count me in,” Bea says, jotting it down in her notebook. “Sunny?”

“Me too.” The more group fundraising we do, the less I have to do on my own.

“Great, then I’ll confirm with Mrs.
